Rules of the Image

The society of secret Images is a collection of images that will belong to the community of Gerland, in Lyon. The collection seeks the opposite to a hierarchical preservation of proper names, the longing of non-degradable matter and the fixation of concepts. It will be an active collection where the donated image provokes an empirical exercise that will generate a second and socially produced image.

The physical space that houses the collection is a room in a family apartment. We call this site the Event Horizon, where the only possibility of observing the donated images before they disappear into invisibility takes place.

The circuit of the image:

  • The donated image enters The Society of Secret Images.

  • The donated image is exhibited (or not) at The Event Horizon before being withdrawn into secrecy.

  • The Invisible College produces an empirical exercise to activate the donated image.

  • The empirical exercise’s outcome is a new self-produced image by the society.

  • The socially and self-produced image enters the collection.

  • The donated image could stay to join the self-produced image or leave the collection (leave = given back, destroyed or erased).

The donated images should have a root in phenomena that were non-visible for the eye, and they became visible –they were pushed to a visible surface– thanks to the use of technology, such as a microscope, a telescope or artistic representation.

The donated image could be in any format available. The image could even be secretly whispered into someone’s ear or a revolutionary call shouted in the streets.

The Sourcerer doesn’t have to be the author of the image they donate.

The donated image will only become public at the Event Horizon. The only way for The Eye of Mercury to see the donated images is through its physical presence.

The donated image cannot be published by The Society or by the artists in the press, books, websites, etc., unless the Sourcerers allows it after a specific request from The Society or the artists.

The future of the donated image after serving its catalyst purpose for producing an image through collective imagination and labour, will be decided between the Sourcerers and The Society.

The self-produced image of the Society could be exhibited or published by the Society or the artists of the project whenever they want.
